Here are some steps to help you get started.

Watch the Morphology Using a Word Study Approach VideoÂ
Watch this video pulled exclusively from my Word Study video series to learn more about morphology instruction, specifically through the lens of a word study approach. However, you can use any approach—it’s all valuable!

Download the Morphology Presentation
Access the Introduction to Morphology presentation, companion guide, and student reference sheets. The slideshow is available in two formats—one for independent study and one for teacher-led instruction. Use the companion guide for detailed prompts and the student reference sheets for easy practice and reference. These resources are designed to help you gain knowledge of morphology and share it with students, in parts and over time, as you wish.

Download Your Morphology Posters
These posters focus on high-utility prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Use them for whole group instruction, as a student reference, or even to create a dynamic morphology word wall.

Access the Morphology Activities
These activities are designed for you to plug into your instruction immediately. They’ll help you engage your students and implement morphology in a way that’s interesting and exciting for them—with very minimal prep on your part.

Morphology Activities

Spin an Affix
Students will use a spinner to spin a prefix or suffix. They will write a word using the affix they landed on. If they spin the same affix more than once, they will write a new word.Â

Roll an Affix
Students will roll a cube and create a word using the affix they land on. If they roll the same affix a second time, they can create another word using the affix OR use the first word created in a sentence.

Find Someone Who
Students will work with other students in the class to find the answers to the tasks on the worksheet. There are five handouts included: three that focus on affixes and two that focus on roots.Â

Morpheme Search
Collect packaging (cereal boxes, snacks, etc.) or magazines to bring in. Have students read the text on the packaging and search for multimorphemic words. They can list the words and code the word parts or write word sums using the words.

Writing with Morphemes
Students will write words and sentences with specific prefixes, suffixes, roots, or general morphemes. Version 1 focuses on one specific morpheme per printable and version 2 is for a variety of morphemes.

Morpheme Word Work Mat
Students will choose a morpheme card and place it or write it in the middle of the mat. They will then create four tasks with that morpheme: determine what type of morpheme it is, define it, use it in a word, and then use that word in a sentence.

Morphology Matrix Activities
Once your students have the common morphemes down, start building and analyzing matrixes!
