Reestablish Routines
Ideas:
- Greet them at the door and remind them of the morning routine (using quick and simple words)—unpack, get started on morning work, etc.
- Post anchor charts or simple steps to remind them of daily routines.
- For key transitions (lining up, group work), give extra time to remind them exactly how to do it. Repeat and review as needed.

Use Positive Reinforcement
First days back can be tricky, so go positive! Use your current system or try something new—like handing out printable cards for specific behaviors.
Here’s what you can reward:
- Following routines or procedures
- Getting started with work immediately
The more specific you are, the better your students will focus!
Incorporate Movement
Students are often restless after a break, so add movement to help them focus.
Keep it simple on the first day back:
- Around-the-room activity: Let them move while solving questions.
- Scoot activity: Have students rotate through stations to answer questions or solve problems.
- Brain breaks: Add short, non-academic movement breaks (like stretching or a quick energizer) to reset their focus between lessons.
